Following the release of her debut EP petunias, Ava Valianti’s sophomore project Sophomore Slump (out May 22) marks a turning point, both sonically and emotionally. Where her debut EP petunias introduced her as a fearless, confessional songwriter, Sophomore Slump leans into a louder, more guitar-driven indie pop-rock sound, capturing what it feels like to grow up in real time, with all the pressure, messiness, and self-awareness that comes with it.
The EP brings together previously released singles “Deep Fuchsia,” “Sophomore Slump,” “Birthday Cake,” and “The Conversation,” each exploring a different angle of expectation and identity - from the bold, electric reset of “Deep Fuchsia,” to the self-aware unraveling of “Sophomore Slump,” the existential weight behind “Birthday Cake,” and the quiet heartbreak and guilt woven through “The Conversation.”
Together, they build toward the project’s two new tracks: “Heads on Fire,” the focus track, and “Great Pretender.” These songs push Ava’s sound and storytelling even further - bigger, sharper, and more unfiltered - tying the EP together as a coming-of-age snapshot defined not by having the answers, but by learning how to sit in the uncertainty.
This EP captures the tension between expectation and reality, offering a raw, coming-of-age snapshot defined by uncertainty, honesty, and resilience.
